Writer-Producer-Director Tyler Perry has reportedly ended his long-term business relationship with Lionsgate. According to THR, Perry and the entertainment company came to a mutual agreement in 2013 not to renew their partnership after failing to find common ground. However, Lionsgate is still releasing Perry’s newest film, The Single Mom’s Club on March 14 as well as any “Madea” films that were previously developed.
Perry first signed on to Lionsgate with his debut film, The Diary of a Mad Black Woman in 2005 and renewed his deal in 2008. As a result, Perry founded 34th Street Films which released his film version of the literary classic, For Colored Girls…and the Tina Gordon Chism comedy Peeples in 2013 with Kerry Washington and Craig Robinson. In addition to not renewing his contract with Lionsgate, Perry is also closing down his L.A. studios of the 34th Street Films and consolidating its operations in Atlanta, Georgia.
In other Perry news, a week ago we reported that he was launching a new talk show for OWN titled Tyler! The Tyler Perry Show. Reportedly, Perry had posted a photo of himself on what appeared to be the set of a new show. However, Indie Wire is now claiming that the show is nothing more than a television special that will air for the next three weeks after his überly popular night soap, The Haves and The Have Nots.
Here is a look at the first show featuring Tika Sumpter, Crystal Fox and John Schneider:
