Deadline is reporting that Oscar-nominated filmmaker John Singleton will take over as director of the upcoming biopic about the life of slain rapper Tupac Shakur. Last September, we reported that Antoine Fuqua was slated to direct the film that was to begin shooting this month in Atlanta. However, it appears now that Singleton has been brought on board to help with a myriad of things including re-writing the film and producing.
The noted filmmaker feels honored to be working on the project considering he directed Shakur in the 1993 film, Poetic Justice alongside dance icon Janet Jackson.
“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” said Singleton. “His passing deeply affected my life.. As well as countless people in this world … His life story is as important to my generation.”
As previously reported, the film is being co-financed by Emmett/Furla/Oasis Film and Morgan Creek Productions and has a $45 million dollar budget. Producers will also have full rights to explore Tupac’s musical catalog which includes his classic albums, 2Pacalypse Now, Me Against the World, All Eyez on Me and Thug Life: Volume 1. The film will be executive produced by Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur.
RC will keep you posted as more of the story continues to develop.
