Here’s the latest in trending entertainment news…
Comedic actress Wanda Sykes is bringing her brand of funny to Nickelodeon’s Nick Mom. According to S&A/Indie Wire, Sykes has inked a new deal with the network to develop an untitled nighttime comedy block for mothers. The project would be the first offering from Sykes’ recent partnership with NBC/Universal that includes developing and producing unscripted shows. The project would also be done in collaboration with Sykes and her production partner Page Hurwitz.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with the talented Wanda Sykes and Page Hurwitz of Push It Productions, Inc. to develop hilarious new content for NickMom,” said Bronwen O’Keefe, NickMom Senior VP.
2013 Soul Train Awards’ host Anthony Anderson is gearing up to star in a new ABC series titled Black-ish. The network has ordered the half-hour scripted comedy that is loosely-based on the life of acclaimed writer and producer Kenya Barris. According to S&A/IndieWire, Black-ish will follow an upper-middle class black man, intent on raising his kids with some sense of cultural identity, in the face of an assault of constant contradictions and obstacles coming from various directions, insisting that his children be color-blind.
“I decided to do this project when I looked up and realized that everywhere I go I’m constantly the fly in buttermilk… I’m usually THE Black guy at work. We’re THE Black family in the neighborhood. My kids are basically THE Black kids at school. I think it’s kind of a situation of be careful what you wish for. It’s almost in like moving on up, I’ve sort of priced myself “out” of being Black,” said Barris.
Reportedly, Anderson would play the lead role with Laurence Fishburne possibly playing his father.
We all know that Idris Elba is a man of many talents (actor, model, and world class DJ) but what we didn’t know was that the brutha could sing. Well, apparently Elba wants his fans to know that side of him too and is contemplating a musical as one of his next projects. According to an interview with the London Evening Standard, Elba would like to go back to his theatrical roots.
“I want to do a musical. I want to do things that challenge me. I’ve got a keen eye on music and would like to do something that marries my world of acting and music. I am not sure if I can sing very well but I will be good — I promise! I will be captivating […] I have [done the stage] in the past sporadically throughout my career. The problem with theater is that I have a short attention span so I can’t do it for six months or whatever,” said Elba.
Not convinced? Check out his 2011 video “Private Garden” in which he is singing and rapping.
