Producers for this year’s 2013 Soul Train Awards are serious about keeping the show authentic and have officially banned performers from using pre-recorded tracks and lip-synching.
According to the executive producer Bart Phillips, every performance will be “100 percent live” with “no tracks.” Phillips went on to say that this year’s new policy is a nod to the show’s enduring legacy, which was always about the music.
“So many legends were made on the infamous Soul Train stage,” he said. “The music is the core and that is what keeps Soul Train relevant today, both with the people who grew up running to their TVs on Saturday morning and to today’s youth.”
Confirmed performers for this year’s show include: Chaka Khan, Jennifer Hudson, Gladys Knight, Tamar Braxton, Big Daddy Kane, and American Idol winners Candice Glover and Ruben Studdard. The show will be taped on November 8 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and will air on December 1 on BET/Centric. Comedic actor Anthony Anderson will serve as host with red carpet duties going to talk show maven, Wendy Williams.
The show’s theme is “We got soul” and Phillips promises it will be one big party.
“It’s a party! People aren’t going to want to miss this,” he added. “We have so many surprises planned. It’s all about the 90s this year!”
