Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift may have been big winners Sunday evening at the American Music Awards but the night clearly belonged to pop superstar, Rihanna. The 25-year-old singer was awarded the first ever Icon Award after performing a moving and well performed (she can be iffy at times) version of her hit record, “Diamonds.”
Dressed in all black, like the omen and rocking a Dominican doobie wrap (diamond pins and all), Rihanna was introduced by comedian Bill Maher and later received a congratulatory video message from her mentor and Roc Nation creator, Jay Z.
“It’s with honor and incredible pride, that I present you with this first ever AMA Icon award. It’s tremendous that we have so much more to go. Between me and you, can you believe this shit? Unbelievable…Congratulations,” he said.
However, the biggest surprise was Rihanna’s mother, Monica Fenty, who presented her daughter with the inaugural award. Mama Fenty appeared to be both proud and nervous. “I know the journey and your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused,” she said.
Rihanna, who appeared to be holding back tears, went on to thank her various management, Barbadian supporters, friends, family, fans and glam squad for helping her achieve the award.
“Just about 20 years ago is when I started making your life a living hell with my annoying husky little man-voice as you call it,” she laughed. “I can’t believe that at 25 years old, I’m holding an icon award. That is weird to even say out loud,” she said.
Congrats Rih Rih!
