BET has announced the premiere date of its highly anticipated original scripted drama Being Mary Jane, starring Gabrielle Union. The adult series, which racked in over 4 million viewers for its summer preview, will debut on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 10p.m.
As previously reported, the one-hour long show centers around Mary Jane Paul, a successful yet single African-American news anchor who tries to juggle her life, work and commitment to family while seeking love of her own. Union is featured with a bevy of celebrated actors including Omari Hardwick, Richard Roundtree, Margaret Avery, Tika Sumpter and LaTarsha Roe.
The show was written and produced by Mara Brock Akil, who told us in July that she created the show to spark much needed dialogue in the African-American community:
“I also wanted to talk about the way we as women are affected by society, particularly Black women, and how we have to become liars about who we are. We don’t have the freedom to be who we are because we are constantly being judged and we (African-Americans) are judging ourselves the most. So we are living a life of lies and I kind of wanted to have a conversation about it.”
