Contrary to popular belief, life for RuPaul has not always been a drag!
The self-proclaimed, “Supermodel of the World” is just as giddy about his life now as he was as a brash, underground performer making his way in the early 80’s. With a musical career that spans over two decades, the 52-year-old entertainer is back in the studio working on a new album and a new autobiography. He is also gearing up for the sixth season of his over-the-top reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race, which premieres on LOGO in January 2014.
Fashion designer and RuPaul stan, Jason Wu recently interviewed the drag superstar for Interview magazine. The two artists reminisced about Ru’s early career as well as his unmatched ability to connect with mainstream America.
“…people always ask me why I was able to transform something that had been thought of as subversive into something that was mainstream—where grandmothers and grandfathers would accept it with open arms—and I think that had more to do with the fact that it was a calculated effort to take sexuality out of my image. It was more like a Disney caricature, rather than a sexualized, subversive character. For whatever reason, people don’t feel threatened by me, and I think that it has to do with the sexuality. They don’t think of me that way; they don’t feel sexually threatened by me.”
