EBONY has taken a bold step in commemorating the life and legacy of Trayvon Martin with four distinct magazine covers for the month of September. The special edition, “We are Trayvon” issues explore the Stand Your Ground Laws and what it really means to our community. The covers also serves as a gentle reminder about the on-going issue of race in America. It’s a conversation that Editor-in-Chief Amy Barnett says we must continue having as Black people.
“As a mother of a young Black boy, the tragedy of Trayvon Martin affected me deeply. We simply cannot allow the conversations on this issue to come to a standstill. As the leading source for an authoritative perspective on the African-American community, at Ebony we are committed to serving as a hub for Black America to explore solutions, and to giving readers the information and tools they need to help ensure a bright future for all of our children.”
Gracing the covers of the magazines are Trayvon’s family Sybrina Fulton, Tracy Martin and Jahvaris Fulton, director Spike Lee and his son Jackson, actor Boris Kodjoe and his son Nicolas and NBA player Dwyane Wade with his two sons Zaire and Zion. In addition to appearing on the covers Lee, Kodjoe and Wade share their personal feelings about the situation and how it affects their children. There is also a special prayer of healing from Bishop T.D. Jakes and a poem from Jill Scott, who is also the mother of a young son.
The September issues of EBONY are currently on newstands now!
