Is Will Smith going to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller in Independence Day 2 ?

That is what fans would like to know after a recent announcement was made regarding a sequel to the 1996 sci-fi action film.  Reportedly, ID2  will open in theaters on July 3, 2015, approximately 19-years after the original film date.

According to Indie Wire, neither Smith nor his on screen wife, Vivica A. Fox or their on screen son, Ross Bagley, have been confirmed for the film.  However, what we do know is that the moive will be a “bit like the son’s takeover.” The film’s director, Roland Emmerich, confirmed this news during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly:

”The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back […] And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years […] It’s a changed world. It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don’t know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane […] It’s still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it’s a little bit like the sons take over […] The first one ends on a little success, but only enough to give the humans hope. And then in the second one they free themselves again [from the aliens].”

So far, the only actor from the original cast that has been confirmed for the sequel is Bill Pullman, who played President of the United States, Thomas J. Whitmore.

RC will keep you posted as more of this story continues to develop.
