Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin are gearing up to remake the classic 70’s sitcom Good Times into a feature film. Yes! James, Florida, Thelma, Michael, J. J. and Wilona are coming to the big screen in the not so distant future.
The reboot will focus on the working class couple as they struggle to raise three children in Chicago’s housing projects. The film is set in the 1960’s and will hopefully stay true to the original show. Also on board as producers are William Banister, Michael Daniels and Neville Mouguel along with Eric Monte, Tammie Evans and Carlena Harris as executive producers.
Good Times, which aired on CBS from 1974-79, was one in a series of socially aware Norman Lear-generated sitcoms that pushed the envelope by mixing comedy with topicality and hot-button issues. The series was a spinoff from the popular sitcom “Maude” and made a star out of comedian Jimmy Walker and his famous line “Dyn-o-myte!”
No word yet on whether any of the original cast members will make a special appearance in the film.
