HE SAID, SHE SAID: Meagan Good and DeVon Franklin dish on love and marriage

Love was in the air last Sunday night as actress Meagan Good and her husband DeVon Franklin joined Bishop Paul S. Morton and his wife, Debra for the Walmart Black Love and Relationships forum.

The free event was presented as part of Walmart’s History Teaching History salute and held in the Bank of America Auditorium at Morehouse College. Dr. Alduan Tartt, co-host of TV One’s new show Love Addiction served as the moderator.

The couples shared with the sold out crowd a few keys to building a successful marriage, each one offering some practical advice as well as age old wisdom.

Good and Franklin, who recently wed last June, appeared on this month’s ‘Black Love’ issue of EBONY magazine. When asked if they viewed their union as a typical “Hollywood” marriage both agreed that it was not. In fact, the newlyweds claim there was no pressure because both agree that ‘marriage comes first while careers come second.’

“It’s different because even though we both work in Hollywood, our marriage is not of Hollywood,”  says Good. “Our marriage is the priority; everything else is secondary to that. Yes, there are people who will try to add pressure or say certain things but because ‘our’ relationship is tight and our relationship with God is tight, we just choose not accept anything other than that.”

Franklin went on to say, “I don’t feel any pressure, we are who we are. It just so happens that we are in Hollywood. I think the challenge or the danger is when you start living for those expectations. When you try to do things that will please what you think people want from you versus being honest and being true. Our goal is to be true, continue loving each other and hopefully that love will help others. We don’t look at anything that happens from a PR, publicity standpoint as creating a standard that we have the pressure to live up to or not. Our goal is to be great to one another and be acceptable in front of God and let everything else kind of fall where it does.”

Franklin is currently the senior vice president of production at Columbia pictures and Good stars in the new NBC crime drama, Deception.  She is the second African American actress, following Kerry Washington, to lead a prime time television series on a major network in over 30 years.
