Actress and singer Keke Palmer recently took part in a special ceremony presented by The Ford Motor Company and The National Center for Civil and Human Rights (NCCHR).

It was the 2012 Ford Freedom Unsung Heroes Awards, a new national program that honors individuals who have made significant contributions in their communities and around the world.

Ford held the event this past weekend at Atlanta’s Historic Academy of Medicine at Georgia Tech and recognized several individuals in the areas of Community, Education, Military, Youth and Organization.

19-year-old Palmer served as this year’s youth ambassador and helped Ford’s Director of Community Development Pamela G. Alexander and NCCHR’s Executive VP Deborah J. Richardson present awards to all the youth honorees.

“I’ve always loved supporting the youth or my peers who are doing great things. I started out very young with my dreams, so it’s always good to see other young people doing the same thing. I just love being a part of honoring them.”

Like the young honorees, Palmer spends a lot of her time working with a number of non-profit and charity based organizations including Urban Farmers, The Boys and Girls Club and the anti-bullying campaign called Saving Our Daughters.

When asked who her ‘Unsung’ heroes were, Palmer smiles and credits her grandmother and parents, both of whom she says, “instilled a strong level of faith and belief in God.”

“If you believe in something and are passionate about something but you don’t have the answers to it, talk to God.  That is one of the biggest lessons they taught me as well as leading by example.”
