Deadline reports Shondaland has set up two projects — one of which includes its first half-hour comedy, I Hate LA Dudes, from writer Issa Rae (Web series The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl) — that has been sold to ABC.
Shonda Rhimes and her producing partner at Shondaland Betsy Beers focused on developing projects with other writers this season. The two will both executive produce I Hate LA Dudes.
I Hate L.A. Dudes centers on an aspiring journalist, new to Los Angeles, who becomes the lone female voice on a budding, male-driven Internet talk show, while learning to decode the often humiliating and exasperating rules of the LA dating scene. Rae is writing/co-executive producing.
Expanding into comedy has been a major priority for Shondaland, which established its brand in drama (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Scandal).
Episodes of The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl air the first Thursday of every month on YouTube; the series is quite funny. The show follows J (Rae) as she navigates through her job, love and other uncomfortable social situations. I expect I Hate LA Dudes will be a success with Rhimes producing and Rae writing!
