Shadow & Act reports Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett may reunite (the pair were recently in the Broadway production The Mountaintop) Fox Searchlight’s Black Nativity, based on Langston Hughes’ Broadway gospel musical.

Black Nativity, written and directed by Kasi Lemmons, has been in the works since 2009.  Last year, Lemmons revealed the following about the film:

A gospel musical titled, The Black NativityIt’s a film adaptation of the very slender book Langston Hughes wrote in 1961.  At the time it was very controversial.  The story is about a kid from Baltimore whose mother has to send him to live with her estranged parents.  He’s dealing with people he didn’t know including his grandmother who is a preacher; he falls in a deep sleep at church and dreams of the black nativity. It’s going to be dope.

Jennifer Hudson is in talks to play the boy’s mother in Baltimore.  Jackson and Bassett are in negotiations to play the roles of the boy’s grandparents.  The role of the young boy has yet to be cast.

Jackson, Bassett and Hudson are busy with additional projects:

  • Samuel L. Jackson will be seen in Django Unchained and will have supporting roles in the RoboCop reboot & the sequel to Captain America.
  • Angela Bassett is set to star in Olympus Has Fallen
  • Jennifer Hudson‘s Winnie is slated for release in the U.S. and she will re-team with Terrence Howard in Lullaby.  JHud will also have an arc on Smash
