Singer-songwriter Ne-Yo recently passed on the opportunity to play Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. in an upcoming film.

According to EBONY,  the budding actor who has appeared in Stomp the Yard  and most recently, Red Tails,  turned down the role because it would have required him to gain 30 pounds. This would have interfered with his new chiseled look and image for his upcoming album R.E.D.

“They wanted to start shooting at the time my album R.E.D. comes out and wanted me to gain 30 pounds, so I couldn’t do it,” he admitted. “I’m kicking myself but acting can’t take the place of my music. Plus, I’ve been killing myself in the gym for months preparing for this album because I wanted a complete makeover.”

R.E.D  is slated to hit stores on September 18.
