Multi-talented actress Audra McDonald was overcome with emotion last night as she accepted her fifth Tony Award during the live telecast of the 66th Annual Tony Awards.
This is McDonald’s very first win in the ‘Leading Actress in a Musical’ category; making her the first African-American actress to win five Tony Awards. She shares this prestigious honor with Broadway veterans Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris.
McDonald won for her heartfelt portrayal of ‘Bess’ in “The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.” She was also nominated alongside ‘Bess’ co-stars Norm Lewis, David Alan Grier and Phillip Boykin.
McDonald has appeared in 10 Broadway shows including “Carousel,” “Master Class,” “Ragtime” and “A Raising in the Sun. “ She also has two Grammy Awards, produced four albums and earned two Emmy Award nominations.
