HBO set to premiere an NBA dramedy!

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Money, sex, power and temptation may be the roots of all evil but it sure proves to be good thing for television ratings.  Throw sports in the mix and you’ve got yourself a “SINsational” sitcom or drama that will be the talk around the office water cooler.  Just ask Shonda Rimes about her new success with the much talked about show Scandal.

According to EBONY.com, HBO understands this formula all too well and is bringing all five elements into play as part of a new dramedy about the NBA.  Jeff Nathanson and Gavin Polone of Rush Hour and Curb Your Enthusiasm fame have penned a new television show about the NBA.  The untitled project is said to go behind-the-scenes and look at the seedy world of professional basketball teams and the highs and lows of being a pro-athlete.

I guess with the success of shows like BET’s The Game, HBO is looking to have similar success with this show.  No word yet on who has been cast or storylines.  However, knowing HBO’s past history of original programming this show will be the “must watch” program in your weekly television line-up.

President Obama Awards Toni Morrison with the Medal of Freedom

Posted by | Tamara Ren’ee

Pulitzer Prize winning author Toni Morrison received the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with eleven others this week.  The medal is the highest civilian award and it is given to individuals for their contributions to American Society.

President Obama placed the medal around Morrison’s neck and had this to say.  “Toni Morrison’s prose brings us that kind of moral and emotional intensity that few writers ever attempt.  From Song of Solomon to Beloved, Toni reaches us deeply using a tone that is lyrical, precise, distinct and inclusive.  She believes that language ‘arcs toward the place where meaning might lie.’  The rest of us are happy to be following along for the ride.”

In speaking of all honorees a humble President Obama added, “What an extraordinary honor to be able to say thank you to all of them for the  great work that they have done on behalf of this country and on behalf of the  world.”

The Mane Event: The Coiffure Project spotlights Black women and their natural hair

Need a little inspiration in going natural or want a break from the wear and tear of hair relaxers?

Well, maybe Glenford Nunez can help you…

The 25 year-old photographer from Baltimore is celebrating the beauty of black women and their natural hair in a collection of portraits called “The Coiffure Project.”  Not realizing he was part of a growing natural hair revolution, Nunez says that he actually stumbled across the project by accident.

“I had no idea until I started putting the photos together.  People have thanked me for what I’m doing for natural hair and black women, but I genuinely had no idea.  It’s a super awesome feeling though.”

Nunez currently has the color/black & white photos on his website with the hopes of creating a coffee table book in the near future.

A number of Hollywood starlets have traded in their perms, wigs and weaves for their natural hair including Solange Knowles who is a spokesperson for the Carol’s Daughter ‘Transitioning Movement’.  Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis ditched her lace front wigs and opted for a short crop cut when she graced the cover of the LA Times magazine earlier this year.  The response from fans was overwhelmingly positive.

Catching up with IDRIS ELBA!

Posted by | Cyrena Rose

Golden Globe-winning actor Idris Elba has been working non-stop!  So thankfully, on his one-day off, he took the time to sit and chat with Vulture about his whirlwind life.  While breaking from shooting the thriller No Good Deed and just before jet-setting to Africa to start filming Long Walk to Freedom he gave the interview.  Enjoy the highlights of what Idris had to say:

Why is his home a suitcase:  “No fixed abode, because there’s no point,” Elba says. “I’m a traveling circus for a while.  It feels kind of weird.  Like, if I wanted to go home, there isn’t anywhere to go.  Just a hotel.” All of his things are in storage, save for a suitcase filled with D.J. equipment and a limited wardrobe of road-friendly darks. “I’ve worn this outfit a million times,” he says of the black shirt, gray jeans, and newsboy cap he has on.

How he feels about playing Nelson Mandela:  “It’s one of my biggest opportunities, and I can’t think about preparation or where my head is at.  I just get this sinking feeling as soon as I open my mouth,” he says. “I wish I wasn’t working directly up to it.”

What is his response to roles for black actors:  “Next question,” he says when I raise the subject.  “I’m so bored of answering that…are there differences between black actors’ opportunities and white actors’ opportunities?  Yes, there are.  It’s been said.  I’d rather a young black actor read about success as opposed to how tough it was.  I get these roles because I can act and that’s it.  Hopefully that’s it.  The less I talk about being black, the better.”

Why he admires The Rock: “I love kids and kids like me, so I’d like to do something a bit silly,” he says.  “I admire Dwayne Johnson, the Rock, and his fearlessness in taking roles like that even though he’s known for being a hard man.  That shows versatility.  Plus those movies are a lot of fun, and my daughter likes them.”

How does he feel about being a household name:  “My publicist says a lot of the time people don’t get it.  They’re like, ‘Ee-dris Elba?’ And she’s like, ‘The guy from The Wire.’  I don’t see myself as famous. I’m more, ‘What’s his name again?’  And I love that.”

Get your summer fill of one of Hollywood’s next leading men when he co-stars in iconic director Ridley Scott’s long-awaited latest, Prometheus, which releases June 8.

She Said What?

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

RHOA Nene Leakes sounds off on reality television!  Tami Roman of VH1 Basketball Wives gets emotional on The Wendy Williams Show.  Singing “powerhouse” Stephanie Mills says she will never appear on what popular music show?  Find out in the latest, “She Said What?”

“It’s gone way too far. The truth is the truth. It has just gone too far. Too many fights, my God! I can see if there was one here or there. And I always say to people when they say something about reality, you can say whatever y’all want about reality TV, Atlanta Housewives, we don’t do that. We definitely have had our verbal fights, but never physical fights.” — As said by RHOA Nene Leakes during a recent interview with VIBE.com

“I don’t like that show.  They have approached me quite a few times, but I [won’t] do that show. I’ve always been very private and at 55 I don’t want to open up my life to that.  They’ve done Angela Winbush and they even wanted me to say something about her on that show, and I love Angela, we’re sisters. But I had to tell her, ‘I don’t want to do that.’ …I’m not that girl.”—As told to the Huffingtonpost.com by Stephanie Mills regarding her dislike of the TVOne program, Unsung

[youtube id=”7rakIlCpjIo” width=”600″ height=”350″]

“This particular incident really taught me a valuable lesson. I wasnt really acknowleging the platform that VH1 and Shed have offered me.  And I wasn’t being responsible. For the first time I looked at my daughters and they weren’t really proud of their mom and they were embarrassed of me.”— As told to Wendy Williams by Tami Roman of the VH1’s Basketball Wives.

Russell Simmons set to launch clothing line…again!

Posted by | Ray Cornelius

Russell Simmons refuses to take no for an answer!  The Hip Hop mogul is teaming up with menswear designer Joseph Abboud to relaunch his Argyleculture clothing line this fall.

According to Huffingtonpost.com, Simmons has been down this road before with the sportswear collection.  He has also launched two other clothing lines, Phat Farm and American Classics.  However, Simmons is optimistic that the new partnership will work and says, “Finding the right match is tough.  Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn’t.  But this is Joseph Abboud.”

The revamped collection is said to appeal to the “urban graduate” who is looking to transition into an “urban sophisticate.”  The line of course will feature the signature argyle look infused with pops of color and classic looks like pixelated plaids.  Abboud says, “Traditional preppy has rigid boundaries and this pushes the envelope.”

Here is a sneak peak of what you can expect from the new Argyleculture:
