I don’t know about you but I can barely remember the commencement speaker at my college graduation. I think I was so ready for all of the “Pomp and Circumstance” to be over that I literally tuned them out and was more concerned about how I was going to “show-off” since I was the last student to cross the stage. Would I just shake the president’s hand or would I attempt to do the latest dance as I took hold of my degree?
Well, the girls of Spelman College don’t have to worry about that since their speaker is non-other than Oprah Winfrey! Yes, the former “Queen of Talk” has accepted the invitation from the Atlanta all-girls school and will speak to about 550 graduates on May 20th at the Georgia International Convention Center. Winfrey will also be awarded the school’s National Community Service Award.
Spelman College is no stranger to big name graduation speakers. Just last year, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered the commencement speech to about 500 graduates as well as Ambassador Susan E. Rice in 2010. I’m sure this year’s class of 2012 will have a lot to remember with Lady O delivering their official send off.
