The biopic about the legendary gangsta-rap group N.W.A has a director!  American music video and film director F. Gary Gray (known for the cult classics Friday  and Set It Off  along with thrillers like The Italian Job  and Law Abiding Citizen)  has taken on Straight Outta Compton.

Gray beat out directors John Singleton (“Boyz N The Hood”), George Tillman Jr. (“Notorious”) and Elgin James (“Little Birds”) for this film project set up at New Line by Ice Cube’s ‘Cube Vision.’  Ice Cube, rapper-turned-actor, will produce the bio film as well.

Straight Outta Compton  traces the formation of influential hip hop group N.W.A, which launched careers including Eazy E (group founder), Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren and DJ Yella.  N.W.A, active from 1986 to 1991, endured controversy due to the explicit nature of their lyrics, and was subsequently banned from many mainstream U.S. radio stations.  In spite of this, the group has sold over 10 million CD units in the U.S. alone.

At times the group is credited as the most important group in the history of hip hop/pioneers of gangsta rap!  Straight Outta Compton  was the group’s debut studio album featuring F*** tha Police,  a track that protested police brutality and racial profiling.

The film has not been cast, but the actors chosen will be interesting to see; as will the film!  Who would you like to see play the infamous rap group members?  Tell us what you think about this upcoming biopic!
