On Friday, July 31, PEANUTS will celebrate the 47th Anniversary of its first African-American character, Franklin. The character came about after a school teacher named Harriett Glickman, wrote a letter to the comic strip creator, Charles M. Schulz, following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ms. Glickman urged Schultz to add an African-American character to the popular comic strip. Franklin Armstrong was introduced on July 31, 1968, representing the importance of desegregation. Check out his first appearance below:
