Keke Palmer is stepping into her power for the January 2015 cover of ESSENCE and we must say it looks good on her. The 21-year-old actress, Broadway star and singer is continuing to make strides in her career and can now add another jewel to her glorious crown. Not only is she sporting a new “grown and sexy” look on the cover but she is also the youngest starlet to ever appear on it. This comes after a year of history making “firsts” including becoming the youngest person to host a talk show and the first Black actress to star in “Cinderella” on Broadway. For Palmer, shedding her little girl image hasn’t been an easy thing to do.

“People write on my Instagram page: ‘Don’t be like Miley Cyrus.’ I don’t even know what that means. I’m my own person. You want me to stay with a brand that I’ve outgrown. I’m 21. And it’s not about me proving to you that I’m grown as hell…”

Palmer also says she is so grateful that she decided to take on Broadway and the iconic role of Cinderella.

“I know that the role of Cinderella is primarily for a Caucasian girl, but it didn’t stop me from going in and it didn’t stop them from seeing me,” says Palmer. “There is a bit of intimidation. You think about Denzel, Viola Davis, and you think, Only great people can do Broadway. That was the scariest thing about it, but I’m the type who thrives on pressure.”
