Four-time Grammy Award-winning artist Tracy Chapman turns 48 today.

The American singer-songwriter shot to fame in 1988 with the release of her self-title debut album Tracy Chapman. This album produced the mega billboard hit, Fast Car in which Chapman earned her first three Grammy Awards in the categories of Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

She would later go on to win the coveted award in 1997 for her hit single, “Give Me One Reason.”

Chapman is a huge supporter of human rights organizations and has performed for a number of charity events including the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, Make Poverty History, amfAR, and The AIDSLifeCyle in which she performed and rode. She currently lives in San Francisco.
